Congratulations to Kurt, Jessica, Rachel, Emma, Cindy and Daniel for successfully completing “Get ready for work: hospitality and tourism” course. This was a pre accredited program preparing people for entry level jobs in the tourism and hospitality sector. Noweyung has been working in partnership with East Gippsland Learn Local Paynesville Neighbourhood Centre to run this course at the Noweyung Café.

The free course ran for eight weeks specifically focusing on the development of skills suitable for entry level jobs in the sector, such as wait staff, customer service, cleaners, baristas or similar. In the course we provide a supportive learning environment, with a small class size, safe classroom environment and flexible learning that is responsive to the needs of the individual.

The two main focus for ‘Get Ready for Work: Tourism and Hospitality’ were:

Employability skills: Often called ‘soft skills’, ‘employability skills’ means helping people to get up-to-speed on things such as teamwork, communication, problem-solving, using your initiative, learning on-the-job, planning and technology.

Local connections: Making connections with local tourism/hospitality industry providers who will be responsive and supportive to the needs of course participants and people with a disability. This includes accommodation providers, restaurants, cafés, activity providers (e.g., mini golf, segways), tourism information services. We maximise the use of these local connections and industry panels to provide participants with information about employment opportunities in the community and to discuss important workplace issues like OHS, social media in the workplace, food safety, dress code, customer service.

Participants attended once a week and the Graduation afternoon was held on Thursday 20th April. The course participants, and Kurt attending remotely, enjoyed a celebration with certificates being presented by Christie Seear and Julia Fitz-Gerald. Congratulations to all and thankyou to Christie who was the course facilitator.

For anyone who is interested, the course will be run again later in the year. (Subject to numbers). To register your interest please contact us https://noweyung.org.au/register-for-supports/#support-form
